American Gladiators Premiere Show Review
Most of us remember it. American Gladiators. Personally, I grew up watching it. I used to want to be one of the strong gladiators. Instead, I was a skinny young boy. Anyway, American Gladiators is back. The show premiered on January 6, and here's how it went. It started out similar to the old one, a graphic-rich title showing the gladiators with all their powerful, one-word names. Names like Titian, Fury, Judge, Wolf, and Helga. Some of the new gladiators were disappointing in themselves. They were too over the top. They were trying way too hard. Wolf, for instance, is a shaggy, crazy, hairy guy. That would be fine in itself, but he constantly howls. It gets old, fast. The show starts with a game football-basketball game with volleyballs. The match ends and a girl comes out with an injury. The first of many tonight. Her calf is so swollen so much, it looks like a pear. She needed a replacement competitor. Apparently, American Gladiators has made the game more dangerous. Another competitor hurt his arm, another hurts her leg, and even a gladiator hurts his shoulder. In the "Eliminator," one woman hit her head, and finished the race with blood running down her entire face. It's clear who American Gladiator is trying to appeal to. They even have an over-the-top host. Hulk Hogan. I appreciate the over-the-top-ness of it all though. That was what the old show was about. It's always been crazy. You don't watch American Gladiator expecting to come out with a new look on life. The challenges are still intense. They have some of the old favorites like the Wall, Pyramid, and the Gauntlet, as well as a few new ones. The electric guitar riffs and strobe lights keep the adrenaline pumping. It's a bit cheesy, but some fans will just smile at it all. The "Eliminator" is just as good as ever. The competitors always struggle to finish it, and you get some good, dramatic endings. It's not too easy, but everyone usually finishes. The competitors are all fit, and usually paired as opposites. They had a New York City firefighter, and a professional skateboarder. They are all strong athletes, and they're all likable people. American Gladiators does try to push the drama a little too much. They insert times for the gladiators to smack talk the competitors and such. They get a little nasty too. At one point a competitor was punching a gladiator in the Gauntlet. They also push the girl vs. girl sex appeal too much. They like to strategically place sexual innuendos during the girl's competitions. I counted 4 or 5 in one event alone. It gets a little much, but maybe it'll tone down as time goes by. Overall, I think American Gladiators is back for a while. It's a bit too cheesy, and tries to be cool a little too much, but I think a lot of people will still enjoy it. I do think older fans of the show will be turned off though, since the show is directed at new fans. I would recommend everyone watch one episode though. I think it's a great "guilty pleasure," and a fun thing to watch when nothing is on. |
